Andre Arul

Mr. Andre Arul obtained his B.A. (Hons) and M.A. degrees in Law from Pembroke College, Cambridge University, the United Kingdom and was called to the English Bar at the Honourable Society of The Middle Temple, London in 1988. He was called to the Singapore Bar in June 1989, having served pupilage in Allen & Gledhill in the financial services/banking department. Both his work there and his current work still mainly lies in corporate matters, corporate/commercial advisory work and litigation, arbitration and trusts.


He was an associate in Allen & Gledhill and then Khattar Wong & Partners for a total of 6 years. Subsequently, in 1995, he was lead counsel for a joint venture on behalf of Malaysian royal interests (now the Sultan of Johore in Malaysia and its King since 2024) involved in the negotiation and acquisition of oil and gas concessions in Indonesia. He has also worked with other large private and public oil companies, such as Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd and the Indonesian state oil company Pertamina.


In 1996, he became a founding partner of Arul Chew & Partners and has since been involved in numerous local and cross-border litigation, arbitration, corporate/commercial and contract matters involving publicly-listed and established companies. The proceedings have included arbitration award setting-aside proceedings, intellectual property disputes and disciplinary tribunals in other jurisdictions.


He has worked with senior practitioners in many jurisdictions, such as from Switzerland, Germany, England, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Sri Lanka and elsewhere.

He has appeared as co-counsel with, and lead counsel against numerous Senior Counsel in litigation, and President's Counsel from Sri Lanka in arbitration in Singapore.


He acts and advises in all manner of dispute resolution in the High Court, Court of Appeal, State Courts and in other Courts and tribunals.

  • Appointed assessor to determine applications on quantum of costs to be paid to purchasers of housing units delayed in delivery under Part 8C of the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act 2020. : December 2021

  •  Have sat on sub-committees of The Law Society of Singapore (International Relations Committee, 2007, 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2019 and Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIArb) (Publication Committee 2007, 2008 and 2009) over the years and previously on the Social Welfare Committee and Small Firms Committees.
  • Member of the Mediation Committee of the Law Society of Singapore in 2021.
  • Moderated/organised a Law Society Seminar on Mediation in 2019 and another on arbitration/mediation in 2022.
  • Member in 2018 and then Vice-Chairman of Law Society of Singapore Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) committee (Mediation) in 2019 and Vice-Chairman (Neutral Evaluation & Determination) in 2020 & 2021 and Co-Vice Chairman of ADR committee in 2022, 2023 & 2024.

 


General:

  • Attended Masterclass for Arbitrators organised by International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Hong Kong 7-9 March, 2013 with distinguished speakers and participants from the world over as well as ICC Masterclass in Singapore from 15-17 January, 2014 as well as other ICC seminars in Singapore and on Zoom to date.
  • Certificate by Singapore Society of Construction Law for five (5) days construction related disciplines course in early 2017 and in 2018.
  • Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) Certificate for Building & Construction law Course (Construction adjudication) from 1 – 21 August 2020.
  • Attended Asia Pacific Arbitration Group of the International Bar Association (IBA) in KL, June 2016 and regular attendance for SIAC annual arbitration days, seminars etc. in Singapore over the years.
